ANDRZEJ PIERZGALSKI GALLERY - ongoing call for entry

Throughout the history of modern art, there have been many art forms featuring text. Beginning from cubist paintings, in which there were letters, numbers, words, fragments of sentences and collages of texts, through abstract poetry, simultaneous recitation in Dada, Marcel Duchamp's language games, visual poetry and poesia visiva, the importance and the meaning of a word in Fluxus, from Pop Art on the one side, to conceptualism on the other. However, apart from our experiences of text in art, each of us also has our own experience of text in everyday life. When we walk down the street, we read all the time, constantly creating collages made by fragments of words and sentences. Furthermore, the nature of our thoughts is textual. Inspired by these two sources - the discourse of art and everyday life - we can find material for new artistic activities based on text. As part of the 4th Art & Documentation Festival, we plan to open the Andrzej Pierzgalski Gallery, named after the legendary founder of the A4 Gallery in Lodz in the 70s.

This will be organised in the form of a presentation of works in A4 format, attached to the Art and Documentation journal. It may consist of artists' texts, quotations and artists' statements, mini-essays, registrations of conversations, handwritten notes, etc. These may take various graphic and typographic forms.

Please send your proposal as an already prepared textual or graphic work in A4 format, or in the form of an electronic file. All submitted work should be black and white. Colour can be used if it is in a close relationship with the text. Please, send your proposals to the Art and Documentation journal's office:

ART AND DOCUMENTATION journal.

We have just published the 5th issue of Art and Documentation journal.

The fifth issue of Art and Documentation journal features collected papers from the symposium accompanying the 3rd Art and Documentation Festival. The collection of papers under a common title "Documented art" offers an insight into a few areas where problems within contemporary documentation arise.

Let us begin with the most general questions, that build a philosophical, aesthetic and methodological background for reflections on documentation as it is today. A basic term here is 'horisontalism' discussed In Grzegorz Sztabinski's text. Iwona Szmelter presented the methodology of care and preservation of contemporary ephemeral artworks, that today make up the majority of progressive artistic production. Her text is supplemented by Monika Jadzinska's article which is a kind of a 'scholarly manifesto' referring to the role of documentation in contemporary art and the active attitude of a conservator towards important artworks. What is most important in art now is ephemeral in nature. The conservator's care makes it possible to store ephemeral art in museums, but also to commercialise it, which may cause objections. The problems discussed in the texts by Monika Bakke (bio art, wet media art) and Weronika Dobrowolska (interactive art) provide examples of the application of these methods. The collection of symposium papers is complemented by the translation of an article by Susan Jarosi in which the author undertakes the question of 'the image of the artist'.

The collection of texts in the research part of the journal shows the state of discourse with regard to art documentation, lead by various means and using various tools (curatorial, critical, scholarly and artistic).

The research section of the journal is supplemented by the materials from the Contexts symposium in Sokolowsko and primary materials, both current and historical (the U Zofii [At Zofia's] Gallery and Czyszczenie Dywanow [Carpet Cleaning] Gallery) plus documenting art festivals such as Interactions in Piotrkow Trybunalski and Global Communication in Radom.

One of the journal's missions is to initiate a conversation about art through the discussion of topics arising in books, and in this issue the review of an important documentary publication Tytul roboczy about Andrzej Mitan's art is featured.

Film on art - historical category and contemporary filming possibilities.

Venue: The Film Museum in Lodz
Curators: Tomasz Komorowski, Lech Lechowicz

The Film on art show is another regular feature of the Art and Documentation Festival. The aim of the curators - Tomasz Komorowski and Lech Lechowicz is to renew a formerly popular type of a documentary film, that is the film on art. Films of that group were mainly short-features, very often presented as supplements before the 'main' film. At that time the Review of Films on Art was held in Zakopane.

These films had to be made by cinematographers due to the requirements of production and technology. Today everybody can make a 'film on art'. The technologies that are available now allow film documentation to adopt various artistic forms and illustrate a variety of aesthetic images. They also show the various professional approaches to art.

The films presented as part of the Film on art show during the 4th Art & Documentation Festival were made specifically by the directors in response to the cinematographic category: 'film on art'.

The 'film on art' category is a subject of constant theoretical reflection as part of the festival, with reference to the research on its methodology and categorisation.

The festival projections are connected with discussions between filmmakers about the ways art can be documented in the form of a movie. The discussions are attended by cinematographers, cameramen, curators, artists and documentary filmmakers.

The works from the 'film on art' category will be presented as part of an open competition. We would like to renew an interest in making such movies, in order for the category to gain a formal and artistic independence as documentary cinematography.

As part of the 4th Art and Documentation Festival we organise two shows of films on art:
- a historical show
- a contemporary show of films made during the last 5 years

Works for the historical show are selected by the curators of the 'Film on art' project.

Works for the contemporary show are chosen by a jury. The jury includes:
curators of the 'Film on Art' project, a representative of The Film Museum in Lodz, a representative of the Art and Documentation Association, a representative of the Festival's Organising Committee.

Please, send your proposals to:
